EL REPTE DEL PRESENT PEL FUTUR: EL CANVI CLIMÀTIC

En el Barcelona Supercomputing Center es realitzen estudis de pronóstics de la qualitat de l´airem sobre el transport de pols natural i sobre el canvi climàtic. Tot això gràcies a les prestacions del superordinador Mare Nostrum. A través de la tecnologia que ofrece este gran ordenador han dissenyat un sistema de pronòstic de l´aire per a la península ibèrica que ja es troba penjat a la seva pàgina web, així com també un pronòstic del transport de pols saharià.

Aquest tipus de pols té un impacte vital en l´ecosistema on es concentra. Però si hi ha un tema que està despertant una preocupació en l´àmbit internacional és el canvi climàtic. Indubtablement, el canvi climàtic serà un dels temes més importants del s.XXI, y probablement un dels problemes més greus amb el qual s´hagi enfrontat la Humanitat. I el Barcelona Supercomputing Center es dedica a la creació d´índex i recursos per a preveure el nivell de contaminació de l´aire. Un dels projectes que s´estan realitzant és l´estudi de l´aire de Barcelona en funció del trànsit.

EL CANVI CLIMÀTIC POT INUNDAR EL GOLF DE ROSES I LA DESMBOCADURA DEL TER EN POCS SEGLES

Els propers segles seran clau per veure com es desenvolupa el canvi climàtic a les comarques gironines, i especialment a la Costa Brava. De moment, encara és molt difícil fer previsions, perquè la principal causa de l´increment del nivell del mar és el desglaç i aquest pot variar molt (sobretot segons les emissions de gasos que es facin). Tot i això, si el mar va creixent al ritme que ho fa ara (uns 2,5 mil·límetres l´any, segons un estudi del Ministeri de Medi Ambient i la Universitat de Cantàbria), d´aquí a 800 anys el nivell haurà crescut dos metres i s´haurà «menjat» bona part del golf de Roses, així com la desembocadura del riu Ter. Roses, Sant Pere Pescador, Empuriabrava, l´Escala, l´Estartit, Pals i, en menor mesura, Blanes, serien les poblacions més afectades. Així, els aiguamolls serien les primeres zones a desaparèixer.

The Advisory Council for the Sustainable Development of Catalonia (CADS), advisory commission for the Catalan Government in sustainable development matters, has promoted and coordinated the undertaking of a study on the possible effects of climate change in our country, with the support of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia and the Institute of Catalan Studies.

This study, initiated in October 2002, brings together work by fifty Catalan experts on various fields of knowledge related to this phenomenon. Physical Impacts of Climate Change on Deltaic Coastal Systems (I): An Approach

Abstract: The evaluation of the impact of climate change on deltaic systems implies studying a multi-component system in which the complexity of links is high enough to present doing it as a whole. Because of this, it is a reasonable approach to study separately the behaviour of each element, to be afterwards linked into a general conceptual model for deltaic behaviour. Moreover, in the case of largely regulated deltas, the main impacts of climatic change will be marine-related since those related to the catchment areas will be severely damped by river regulation and management policies. This fact implies that coastal fringes may become the main frontier between the delta and climatic change effects. In this context, a methodology to study climatic change impacts on deltaic coastal fringes is here presented. It will be further developed on two companion papers dealing with the study of driving terms and coastal response. As coastal processes act at different time and space scales, determining the reference – initial – situation must be done taking into account the inherent system dynamics. It is thus unrealistic to characterize the initial stage as a static one. In order to avoid this simplistic approach, a comprehensive approach to the coastal system must be employed, with three different scales (long-term/large scale, medium term/scale and episodic).

El cambio climático no es sólo más calor. El aumento del nivel del mar se comerá 15 metros de playa de media en España antes de 2050. Así lo establece el informe Impactos en la costa española por el efecto del cambio climático encargado por el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente a expertos de la Universidad de Cantabria. La Albufera de Valencia, Doñana, la Costa Brava, la Manga del Mar Menor son las zonas más amenazadas. Medio Ambiente recomienda a los ayuntamientos alejar ya las construcciones en marcha junto a la costa. El nivel del mar sube a un ritmo de 2,5 milímetros al año.
